What is atarang?

Atarang is an iPhone app that turns any YouTube song into a personal practice studio for musicians and singers. You paste a YouTube link, and the app splits the track into separate parts on your phone, such as vocals, drums, bass, and guitar. You can then turn down the part you want to perform, press play, and practice along with the rest of the band. The app offers two main workspaces: Mix and Practice. In the Mix view, you adjust the volume of each individual part, mute or solo specific stems, and set up the balance between your microphone and the backing track. In the Practice view, you can loop difficult sections, slow down the song without changing its pitch, or change the musical key without altering the tempo. You can also set repetition targets with automatic tempo ramping, add a manually aligned metronome, and record your performance over the backing track. Atarang remembers all your settings for each song, so you can pick up exactly where you left off. Atarang supports several separation models depending on your needs. A default four-part model is included with the app, while additional models offering two, four, or six separated parts can be downloaded on first use. These downloads range from 40 to 136 megabytes and are verified for integrity before use. Once downloaded, the models stay on your device for future use. Everything happens locally on the iPhone. There is no Atarang server or user account, and all extraction, separation, mixing, and recording remain private to your device. You can export your recordings as audio files and share them through AirDrop, Files, WhatsApp, or other compatible apps. Playback and recording continue even when the app is backgrounded or the screen is locked. Installing Atarang requires a Mac with Xcode and an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later.
