BongoCat-Desktop is a desktop pet app that puts an animated cat overlay in the corner of your screen. As you type, the cat drums along with sound effects and animations, reacting to your keystrokes in something like a rhythm companion for your typing. When you stop typing, the cat switches to idle animations like napping or playing with toys. You can pick from different sound profiles such as bongo drums, claves, or shakers, and adjust volume separately for keystroke sounds and idle sounds. There are also different cat variants to choose from, such as tabby, tuxedo, orange, and calico, along with light, dark, and custom color themes. Settings are stored in a bongocat.json configuration file where you can set the cat breed, sound profile, screen position, and other display options. The app supports multiple languages, including English and Vietnamese as complete, with Japanese also marked complete, and Spanish and German listed as in progress. It runs on Windows 10/11, macOS Monterey and later, and Ubuntu 22.04 and later, with iOS support in beta and Android support planned but not yet available. Optionally, you can connect the app to OpenAI's API or Anthropic's Claude API using your own API key, which lets the cat generate contextual comments about your typing. The README also mentions plans for a future offline mode using local models like Llama 3.2, Phi-3, and Mistral 7B, though this is not yet available. The project is licensed under MIT, meaning you can use, modify, and distribute it as long as you keep the original copyright notice. The developer states the app does not collect personal data or transmit keystrokes off your machine. It is an independent, community project not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, or any operating system vendor, and it uses less than 50MB of RAM while running.
