What is retroforge?

RetroForge is a desktop application for cleaning up SD cards used in retro gaming handhelds, the small budget devices that let you play old console games like NES, SNES, or Game Boy titles from ROM files. It scans a folder or SD card full of ROMs, then fills in missing cover art, game descriptions, genres, and cheat files, fixes broken game list files, repairs damaged files, and tidies up messy all capital letter filenames, all through one desktop app with a single button called Card Perfect. The author built it because many of these cheap handhelds, such as the R36Max and similar clone devices, have no WiFi at all, so games normally show up with no cover art or metadata since the device itself cannot download anything. RetroForge is meant to run on a regular computer instead, prepare the card fully offline ready, and then you copy it back onto the handheld. It works with a wide range of older systems including Nintendo, Sega, and Sony consoles, several arcade formats, and builds the correct folder structure for popular frontends like ArkOS, Batocera, RetroPie, and ES-DE. The tool is available as a portable standalone build for Windows, Linux, and macOS, so there is nothing to install: you download the file for your system and run it directly. Every cleanup step is designed to be reversible, since the app makes backups before editing anything, quarantines unreadable files instead of deleting them, and refuses to run its more destructive steps unless it detects an actual ROM card. As of a recent update, the cover art and metadata RetroForge downloads are encrypted in transit, so the hosted art library cannot easily be scraped or copied without going through the app itself. RetroForge is completely free, with no account, sign up, license key, or usage tracking required, though the project accepts optional donations to help cover its hosting costs.
